The NC State wrestling team fell to Oklahoma Thursday afternoon, 46-0, in front of an audience of 525 at Westmoore High School in Moore, Okla. The Wolfpack was banged up heading into the duals, forced to battle without 165-pounder Kevin Gabrielson(high ankle sprain) and heavyweight Ricky Fowler, who was with the football team at the Gator Bowl.
The duals began at 125 pounds, where senior George Cintron lost to Bo Maynes by a 4-1 decision. Then at 133, NC State's Daniel Pacitti suffered a major decision loss to senior Witt Durden, 13-2. In the next weight class (141), Sooner freshman Teyon Ware, who was undefeated in high school, came out of his redshirt season and decisioned Ryan McCallum, 9-2.
Oklahoma continued its success when Nate Parker, a returning All-American, pinned Jake Giamoni at 1:56. Then, 157-pounder Rafael Maturino added another dual win, this time by forfeit over Scott Garren. Garren, ranked No. 18 nationally by Intermat, suffered a mild concussion in practice earlier in the week, and the coaching staff had been considering holding him out of action until the NC State Duals on January 11.
Next, 174-pounder and 15th-ranked Dustin Kawa moved to the 165-pound class and was handed a 5-1 loss. The next three duals would all be pins for the Sooners, as 174-pounder and All-American Robbie Waller led the way, pinning the Wolfpack's Michael Waite at 1:53. Junior Jon Godwin was pinned by top-ranked Josh Lambrecht at 1:56 in the 184-pound weight class, and redshirt freshman Daniel Humphries suffered the final pin by Oklahoma senior Tom Grossman at 3:39 at 197 pounds. The last dual of the afternoon saw redshirt sophomore Matt Gulliver suffer a 12-7 decision loss to Joel Tapler at heavyweight.
The Wolfpack will now return home, as it begins to get ready for its host role in the NC State Duals coming up on January 11th at Reynolds Coliseum.
