RALEGH, N.C. - North Carolina's Ryan Adams pinned Ricky Fowler at heavyweight, and the Tar Heels went on to win two of the remaining three matches and six of the last seven overall to hand NC State a 21-13 defeat Tuesday evening in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Tar Heels improved to 3-2 in dual matches for the 2002-03 season, 1-0 in ACC competition. The Wolfpack fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The match began at the 149-pound classification, and NC State won the first three bouts to take a 10-0 lead. Defending ACC champion Jake Giamoni (6-7) got takedowns in the second and third periods to defeat Chris DiGuisseppe 5-1, dropping DiGuisseppe to 8-7 on the season. Scott Garren, undefeated and ranked 15th nationally at 157, had a takedown and a near fall in the first period and went on to run his record to 8-0 with an easy 10-2 major decision over Garrett Atkinson (6-13). The Pack's Dustin Kawa (8-3) then defeated Jimmy O'Connor 9-4 at 165. O'Connor fell to 15-8 with the loss.
Mark Canty (14-8) stopped the Wolfpack momentum with a second-period takedown against Kevin Gabrielson (4-4) and wound up with a 4-3 decision to put the Tar Heels on the board at 10-3. Dusty Heist (9-3) then stopped Jon Godwin (4-7) by a 6-2 score at 184, and freshman David Dashiell pulled UNC to within a point at 10-9 with a 12-5 decision over Matt Gulliver (0-6).
That set the stage for Adams (13-5), who took Fowler (0-2) down midway through the first period and got the fall at the 2:28 mark, turning the bout around and giving North Carolina a 15-10 lead with three bouts remaining.
The headliner matchup of the evening was the showdown at 125 pounds between defending ACC champion George Cintron of the Wolfpack and All-American Chris Rodrigues of the Tar Heels. The two faced one another three times in 2001-02, with Cintron winning twice, including a 3-1 overtime thriller in the ACC championship match. In a bout that was eerily similar to the ACC finals a year ago, Cintron got an escape in the second period, and Rodrigues got one in the third to end regulation at 1-1. The one-minute overtime period was was active but scoreless, and in the sudden-death tiebreaker, Cintron (8-4), wrestling from the down position, escaped with about six seconds remaining to take the victory over Rodrigues (18-7).
That was the Wolfpack's last hurrah. UNC's Evan Sola (18-7), ranked 19th at 133, defeated Daniel Pacitti (2-3) by a 8-1 decision, and freshman Brian Bagglio (10-6) handed the Wolfpack's Ryan McCallum (7-8) a 4-3 loss at 141.
