Gymnastics Falls in Season Opener

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. - The NC State gymnastics team fell in its first meet of the season at Central Michigan 193.825-192.300. NC State got strong performances on both bars and floor, but low scores on vault and beam were too much to overcome.
On bars NC State landed its top score of the day, a 48.875, and also recorded the top-five finishes. Senior Marlyn Madey brought home first place honors with her score of 9.825. Madey was followed closely by newcomer Leah Sabo who scored a 9.8. Rounding out the top-five on bars were sophomore Kelley Kello in third with a 9.775, senior Aimee Panton in fourth with a 9.75, and senior Adina Stock tied for fifth with her score of 9.725.
Junior Cheryl Potacco also brought home a first place finish, winning on vault with a 9.725. Sabo placed fourth on vault with a 9.625. On beam, sophomore Cori Goldstein was NC State's top finisher, placing third with a score of 9.75. Sabo notched her third top-five finish of the day, a fifth place showing on beam with a score of 9.7. Goldstein was also NC State's top finisher on floor, scoring a 9.8 for sixth place. Senior Cara Dougherty was seventh with a 9.75, and Kello and Madey each scored a 9.65 and tied for eighth.
Sabo finished the day second in the all-around with a score of 38.500.
NC State will host its first home meet of the season this Friday, when Maryland and Ohio State come to Reynolds for a 7:00 p.m. meet.
