The NC State volleyball team hits the road tonight as it squares off against Appalachian State for a 7 pm match at Holmes Center. The Wolfpack (0-4) is looking for its first victory of the 2002 season after coming off a winless trip to the Florida Atlantic Tournament last weekend.
In its first three matches, NC State struggled, losing in three games to highly regarded Minnesota, host Florida Atlantic, and Wright State. Against Youngstown State, however, the Wolfpack showed much improvement from its earlier matches, taking the first two games, 30-21 and 30-28. But as fate would have it, the Penguins would battle back to defeat NC State in five games.
Sophomore Sarah Ensminger received all-tournament honors after posting a .270 hitting percentage, while averaging 2.29 kills and 1.50 digs a game. Also stepping up for the Wolfpack were freshmen Amy Cochran and Kayla Ragan. Cochran finished the tournament with a .329 percentage and recorded 31 kills, while Ragan factored in defensively with 22 digs.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are a perfect 4-0 after winning the High Point Invitational last weekend. ASU features two key offensive weapons in Chrissy Finch and Stefanie Panzer, both of whom will look to factor in during the Mountaineers' first home match. Finch leads the team in kills with 51, an average of 3.40 a game, while Panzer is first on the squad with a .443 percentage.
