
Women's Golf Takes Fifth At The ACC/SEC Challenge

Destin, Fla. - The NC State women's golf team finished strong and moved into a tie for fifth with Mississippi State in the final day of competition at the third annual ACC/SEC Challenge on Sunday. Two golfers finished in the top 20, including Briana Vega who competed as an individual during the tournament. Sunday she recorded her lowest career score with a par 71. Sarah Bonner was the team's highest finisher, with a three-day score of 224to take a share of 16th.
Vega, a native of Maplewood, N.J., shot rounds of 76 and 73 before today's par performance. Bonner, who played consistently all three days, carded her highest score of the tournament with a 77. On Friday, the Kingsport, Tenn. native made her first hole in one.
Sunday's top team performer was Colby Cobb. Cobb fired a 75 for a tournament score of 226. Cobb tied with two other players for a share of 24th, including Courtney Pomeranz. Pomeranz shot a 77 in the final round to finish at 13-over par.
Erica Wein and Malin Claesson rounded out the field for the Wolfpack with 31st and 34th place finishes. The Challenge was the first tournament play of the fall for Wein and Claesson. Wein, a native of Cary, N.C., finished with a score of 229, while Claesson tallied a 230 card.
Auburn posted the best team score of the final round to earn a come-from-behind team victory at the 2002 Chrysler ACC/SEC Women's Golf Challenge at the Raven Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Tigers posted a 296 to surpass defending national champion Duke on the final day of competition to outdistance the Blue Devils by six strokes. It marked the second time in three years Auburn had competed in the event and the second time it has claimed the team championship.
Auburn was led by Diana Ramage, who shot a three-round total of 214 to claim individual medallist honors. Ramage shot a one-over par score of 214 to win the individual championship. Despite shooting her highest score of the tournament in the final round (73), she defeated Furman's Brandi Jackson and Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo by three strokes.
The Southeastern Conference won the Commissioner's Cup for the third consecutive season. The conference battle was the closest in event history with only 10 strokes separating the women's golf super-powers.
