Coming off a dominating 3-0 win Tuesday night over in-state rival East Carolina, the NC State volleyball team now turns its attention to this weekend and its last tournament action until the Atlantic Coast Conference tourney at the end of the season.
The Wolfpack will be heading to New Hampshire, competing against Kent State, Montana State and host New Hampshire this Friday and Saturday at the Wildcat Tournament. Action begins with a 4:30 p.m. match against the Golden Flashes of Kent State on Friday and then will carry over to Saturday, when NC State will face New Hampshire at noon, followed by the Bobcats at 4:30 p.m.
Leading the way for the Wolfpack is sophomore Maya Mapp, who has been hot lately, both offensively and defensively. Mapp is the team's leading attacker, tallying 132 kills thus far, while ranking second in total blocks with 43. In fact, the middle position has been the key for NC State in 2002, with fellow sophomore Sarah Ensminger also playing strong. Ensminger is the leading blocker on the squad with 50 total blocks, while also recording a team-high 91 digs.
Below is a brief synopsis of the Wolfpack's competition:
New Hampshire (3-8) is coming off of two heartbreaking losses to Temple and Harvard, falling to each in five games. Junior outside hitter Alyson Coler leads the offensive attack for the Wildcats, with a .237 attack percentage and 178 kills. NHU, as a team, is averaging 2.07 blocks per game.
The Bobcats of Montana State come into this weekend with an 8-3 record, suffering only one defeat in its last three matches. MSU fell to Fresno State 3-0 while participating in the University of Denver Pioneer Classic last weekend. Senior outside hitter Aimee Halyk leads the Bobcats in kills with 137, while setter Kamber Kelly is averaging 11.41 assists a game.
Kent State (3-5) is led by freshmen Danielle Holt and Anne Butts, each of which rank among the Mid-American Conference leaders. Holt, who has totalled 80 kills thus far for the Golden Flashes, ranks third in the MAC in kills per game (3.52), while Butts, who was named to the Kent State Invitational All-Tournament Team last weekend, stands fourth in assists per game (11.00).
