RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State Athletics Director, Lee Fowler, has announced the hiring of Mindy Johnson as the assistant softball coach. Johnson joins head coach Lisa Navas, as the newly instated program gets underway in preparation for the 2003-04 season.
"Mindy is the perfect compliment to the coaching staff," said head coach Lisa Navas. "Her knowledge of hitting, fielding and recruiting will help lay the foundation for a successful softball program at NC State. We as coaches are excited to get out into the community and promote Wolfpack softball."
Johnson arrives at NC State with a solid background in the coaching ranks. As the First Assistant Coach at the University of Missouri from 1999 until 2002, Johnson served as the primary hitting and defensive coach. In addition, she was assigned to coordinate the recruiting efforts of the program. During her tenure, Johnson helped produce two NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-Americans, 14 all-Big 12 conference team members, eight all-Midwest Region team members, three Big 12 all-tournament team members and three National Strength and Conditioning All-Americans. She also guided the 1999 team to a NCAA Regional appearance. Under her academic supervision, 19 student-athletes were named to the all-Big 12 Academic team, while nine garnered NFCA Academic All-America honors.
Prior to her engagement at Missouri, Johnson spent time as a graduate assistant with the University of Tulsa in 1998. There she was responsible for the outfielders and hitters, while assisting with all aspects of recruiting. Johnson also organized and coordinated all camp and clinic activities, as well as travel plans, scheduling and budgeting concerns.
Before joining the coaching ranks, Johnson spent her student-athlete career with the University of Oklahoma. There, she led OU to four consecutive NCAA Regional Tournaments and a 1996 Big 12 regular season and tournament championship. Her career was blanketed with countless awards. In 1997 she was named to the NCAA Regional Tournament team, was second team all-Big 12, a member of the Big 12 all-tournament team and all-Big 12 Academic Honorable mention. In addition, Johnson was an all-Big 12 Honorable mention her junior year and an all-Big 8 Honorable mention her sophomore year. The decorated student-athlete put herself in the record books as well, ranking first in career games played (277), career at bats (733) and career putouts for an outfielder (325). She also ranks third in career hits (188), career RBI (98), career doubles (30) and career total bases (257) and fourth in career extra base hits (45).
While at NC State, Johnson will coordinate recruiting activities, as well as have responsibilities with the outfielders and hitting.
"This is a unique opportunity to join a new program," said Johnson. "It is an honor to be a part of a program with unlimited potential. I am excited to work with Lisa and to get this program into the national spotlight."
