Raleigh, N.C.--The NC State women's soccer team used five goals by five different players Sunday as the Wolfpack trounced the Charlotte 49ers 5-1 at Method Road Soccer Stadium in an exhibition game.
Sophomore Annika Schmidt put the Wolfpack on the board first with a shot into the left corner of the net on Melissa Pressley's cross from the left to make the score 1-0 Wolfpack. The goal was scored on Charlotte's Lauren Dansby who came into the game in the game's seventh minute after starting keeper Jennifer Howell was injured making a save.
Charlotte tied the score just over 16 minutes later when Leslie Canales knocked in a Jennie Leeder crossing feed and slotted the ball into the left corner of the NC State goal past Wolfpack keeper Lauren Georges.
NC State then proceeded to run off four unanswered tallies beginning in the 48th minute when Jordan Allison chested in a long pass from the right by Erin Ardler. The ball skipped past Dansby to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead.
2000 All-ACC honoree Katherine Warman gave NC State a two goal lead in the 52nd minute when she collected a ball in a mad frenzy around the net and blasted it into the top of the net.
2001 All-ACC honoree Adrienne Barnes got in on the fun in the 73rd minute when she took a crossing feed from senior co-captain Lindsey Rosen, eluded two defenders and floated a shot into the left side of the net for a 4-1 lead.
Junior Lindsey Underwood capped the scoring six minutes later when she hammered a shot from 30 yards out that squirted through Dansby's arms for the the final margin.
The game was played in three 30 minute periods instead of the traditional two 45 minute halves at the request of both coaches.
"We really wanted to use this opportunity to try different people at some different places today," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We really got a lot out of this today because not only were we able to pick up a win against a quality team like Charlotte, but we were also able to finish."
"Overall, I'm happy with the effort we put forth. The was definitely a great way to start the season."
NC State will go on the road to face Old Dominion at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in exhibition action.
