Wolfpack Men Drop Home Tennis Finale, 5-2

Raleigh, N.C.--The NC State men's tennis squad was downed by Clemson Friday afternoon 5-2 in the final home match for six Wolfpack seniors at the Wolfpack Tennis Center. The Wolfpack falls to 5-18 overall with the loss and 0-7 in ACC play, while the Tigers improve to 11-15 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, both squads elected to play singles first and Clemson came out on fire with straight set victories at No. 3 by Goran Sterijovski (6-1, 6-2) and Micah Thompson at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2) to take a 2-0 lead.
Senior Matt Lucas closed the gap to one point when he registered a straight set victory over Jamin Thompson at No. 1 (7-6 (5), 6-0). Moments later, fellow senior Ryan Boward pulled the Wolfpack even at two with a convincing thumping of Sander Koning at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 romp.
The Tigers then edged ahead once again with a victory at No. 4 by Dammiisa Robinson in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) over NC State's R.J. Murray, snapping Murray's five-match winning streak.
The match then rested on the shoulders of senior Shane Sealy, who battled Clemson's Marko Gojanovic hard throughout the match and won the first set 8-6 in the tiebreaker. However, Gojanovic continued to put the pressure on Sealy and eventually broke through to slip past the Nassau, Bahamas native 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6 (3) to clinch the match.
Clemson swept the doubles competition for the final margin.
The Wolfpack will be at Wake Forest on Sunday for its final match of the season at 1:00 p.m.
