Wolfpack Completes Day One At Raleigh Relays

Raleigh, N.C. -- The NC State men's and women's track and field squad completed the first day of competition at the 2002 adidas Raleigh Relays Friday at Derr Track. The Wolfpack posted several strong finishes on Friday, a day which consisted of 120 races among 23 events.
The NC State men's distance squad would prove no slouch either as junior David Patterson took second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:10.45. Senior Ryan Woods also posted a top-five finish with a fourth overall showing in 14:18.56. Senior Chris Dugan was the third Wolfpack finisher in 14th (14:41.30), followed by junior Nick Mangum in 20th (14:49.68) and sophomore Neil Pettijohn (92nd) in 16:10.71
Junior James Rowell turned in the strongest men's performance of the day with a fourth overall distance of 163-04.00 in the discus.
Junior David Kessler (5th, 15-07.00) and freshman Eric Hoverstad (t-11th, 15-01.00) spearheaded the NC State effort in the pole vault. That performance was followed by sophomore Troy Graham's, who was the top Wolfpack finisher in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 48.46. Sophomore Monterio Adams was next for NC State in 53rd with a time of 49.54, followed by freshman Adam McGugan in 75th (50.48).
Freshman Jonathan Willis (86th) also took part in the 400 meter hurdles for the Wolfpack men, finishing in 1:00.89.
NC State's strength in the distance events was clearly evident as the Wolfpack women placed three runners in the top five, led by sophomore Kristin Price's second-place finish in 16:06.19. Senior Katie Sabino was right behind her in third with a time of 16:16.45. Junior Megan Coombs rounded out the top five with a mark of 16:36.84. Sophomore Becky Hoover was 43rd overall with a time of 18:00.02, followed by freshman Abigail Nelkie in 77th with a time of 18:45.10. Sophomore Kara Price (16th, 17:14.79), freshman Michelle Popple (51st, 18:15.82) and freshman Ginger Wheeler (57th, 18:21.10) ran unattached in the event.
Senior Beth Fonner supplied the Wolfpack women with their strongest finish in the 10,000 meter run with a fourth overall finish in 34.23.47. That time was also good enough to qualify under for the NCAA Championships under the provisional cut of 35.15.00 . Sophomore Josianne Lauber also took eighth in the event with a finishing mark of 36:04.42.
Senior Renae Robinson led the women's 400 meter contingent with a 56.22 mark, which was good enough for 15th overall. Freshman Shannon Alston (97th, 1:00.95), senior Karen Sykes (103rd, 1:01.17) and freshman Karen Medlin (117th, 1:03.11) also competed for NC State in the event.
Kelly Smoke posted a 22nd overall finish in the discus with a throw of 130-09.00.
The second day of the competition begins Saturday with the field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the track events set for 10:30 a.m.
