
Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season at Charlotte Invite

Charlotte, N.C. - The NC State track & Field squads kicked off their outdoor seasons by traveling to UNC Charlotte this past weekend and competing in the Charlotte Invitational.
Senior Katie Bolac captured a NCAA Provisional mark and in the process broke the school record in the outdoor pole vault. Bolac was second be clearing 12'05.50". In other field events, Kelly Smoke placed fourth in the discus (141'09") and seventh in both the shot put (40'02.25") and the hammer (160'03"). Freshman April Golsby had a top finish in the high jump, clearing 5'02.50" to place fifth.
In the sprints, sophomore Felicia Fant was second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.90 and was fourth in the 200 meters running a 24.42. Senior Renae Robinson came away with a second place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 54.61.
Not many distance runners competed, but the Pack did run well in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Janelle Vadnais notched a second place finish in the 800 meters (2:12.68) and was also fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:39.69). Also running in the 800 meters were Karen Medlin who took sixth (2:16.42) and Karen Sykes was 16th (2:21.84). In the 1,500 meters, Rebecaa Hoover took 14th (4:51.90).
Junior Randy Cass had a busy day competing on the men's side. Cass took fourth in the hammer (177'10"), ninth in the shot put (49'00.25"), and 13th in the discus (133'10"). Also performing well in the hammer was senior Ryan Furlough who placed fifth with a heave of 167'10". Freshman Eric Hoverstad brought home a second place showing in the pole vault, with a top distance of 15'03".
Senior Joseph Brent won the 200 meters in the sprints, running a top time of 20.97. Brent was also fourth in the 100 meters (10.60). Also in the 200 meters, Tyrone Dozier was fourth (21.33) and TJ Giwa took fifth (21.52).
NC State will compete next weekend at the Carolina Invitational hosted by North Carolina.
