
Gymnastics Places Second at Wolfpack Invitational

Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 27 NC State gymnastics team scored a season-best team score of 195.550 to finish second in the annual Wolfpack Invitational held at Reynolds Coliseum Friday night. EAGL rival North Carolina took home top honors scoring a 196.150. Central Michigan was third (195.275), George Washington took fourth (194.600), William & Mary was fifth (192.200), with James Madison in sixth (187.350).
Senior Kelli Brown, the reigning EAGL Gymnast of the Week, was once again the leader for the Pack. Brown tied a school record, which has stood since 1996, by winning the all-around with a personal-best 39.550. Brown won two events on the day, while placing second and sixth on the other two.
The Wolfpack started the meet off strong on the vault scoring a 48.750, the second-highest score of the season. Brown led the Pack with a score of 9.825 to finish in second place. Fellow senior Aimee Panton was close behind, notching a 9.8 and coming in sixth place. Junior Stephanie Southard and freshman Jessica Campbell each scored a 9.725 to tie for 15th place, with Campbell recording a career-high for the second straight meet.
After sitting out a rotation the Pack moved over to bars, an event NC State ranks 14th nationally. The Pack kept up its strong season on bars, scoring a season-high 49.325 with three scores of at least 9.9. The team score on bars also ranks as the second-highest in NC State school history. Brown was once again the Pack's top scorer, notching a 9.925 to win bars for the third straight meet. Panton once again was close behind Brown, as she and junior Marlyn Madey each recorded a 9.9 to tie for second place. Junior Adina Stock posted a career-best 9.85 to finish fifth. Southard and senior Laura Jazab each hit for a 9.75 and tied for 15th.
The Wolfpack struggled on beam during its next rotation, counting two falls and scoring a 48.100. Jazab, the Pack's top beam worker this season, scored a career-high 9.9 to place second. Brown also notched a top score on beam scoring a season-high 9.85 to finish in sixth place. Junior Cara Dougherty was close behind with a 9.825 finishing ninth.
After sitting out another rotation, NC State finished the meet on floor. The Pack also recorded its highest team score on floor for the season, a 49.375. Brown won her second event of the night with a score of 9.95. Freshman Cori Goldstein notch a career-high score of 9.925 to finish in second. Madey and Panton each scored a 9.85 to tie for seventh, while Dougherty and senior Lauren Palefsky posted 9.8 each to give the Pack all six performers with at least a 9.8 on floor.
NC State will compete next weekend in its final home meet of the 2002 season. NC State will host Ball State, Western Michigan, and Yale next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
