RALEIGH, N.C. - Right fielder Matt Butler went 4-for-6 with a career-high five RBIs and five runs scored Tuesday afternoon at Doak Field to lead NC State to a 23-5 victory over Gardner-Webb. Mike Prochaska went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and catcher Colt Morton also went 3-for-5 with one RBI. J.R. Riley had the only home run of the afternoon, a three-run blast.
The Wolfpack improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Gardner-Webb dropped to 1-2. Junior lefthander Daryl Minugh (1-0) picked up the win for NC State despite not pitching particularly effectively. Minugh allowed all five Bulldog runs on six hits in two innings of work. He walked two and struck out one. Lefty Joey Siak (0-1) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, after allowing four hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Siak walked one and struck out three.
Following a scoreless first inning by NC State starter Derek McKee, the Wolfpack offense came out blazing in the bottom of the first with five runs on three hits. NC State chased Long, who recorded no outs after loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Butler started the scoring by roping a single to right that scored third baseman Jeremy Dutton and shortstop Chad Orvella. Prochaska and Morton followed with doubles to left, driving in three runs to make the score 5-0, NC State.
Gardner-Webb (1-2) fought back in the top of the third with three runs beginning with Minugh's balk, which scored second baseman Chip Watts. First baseman Blake Lalli doubled to right field one out later, plating shortstop Jon David Milford and left fielder Sammy Styers to cut the NC State lead to two at 5-3.
The Bulldogs were not finished, however, knotting the score at 5-5 in the top of the fourth with two runs on three hits. Watts singled to center to bring Gardner-Webb within one and scored on Milford's bloop single down the right-field line.
NC State put the game away with nine runs in the bottom half of the inning, battering three different Bulldog pitchers. Center fielder Joe Gaetti began the onslaught with a single to center, scoring first baseman David Hicks. Left fielder Brian Wright put the Wolfpack up two runs when Siak grazed him on the first offering of the at-bat with the bases loaded. Butler then notched his third, fourth and fifth RBIs of the game with a bases-clearing double to left-center to make the score 10-5, NC State. Hicks and Gaetti batted again in the inning to knock in three more runs on a pair of singles, and Orvella walked with the bases loaded. After the dust cleared, the Wolfpack found itself enjoying a 14-5 lead.
The lead was extened to 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth when Butler scored on Bulldog catcher Jim Glueckert's throwing error. Second baseman Adam Hargrave and Dutton rapped singles in the inning, tacking on three additional RBIs to the Wolfpack stat sheet.
NC State tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the sixth when Sammy Esposito singled home Butler to make it a 14-run lead.
The damage was still not done, however, as the Wolfpack put across four more runs to make the score 23-5. Prochaska knocked a single to right, scoring Wright from second. J.R. Riley then had the big blow in the inning with a long home run to left-center field, scoring Butler and Prochaska.
NOTES: The last time NC State scored at least 20 runs was a 20-0 victory over Villanova on February 21, 1999. The last time NC State scored more than 23 runs was a 28-9 win over Maryland on April 13, 1997.
