The NC State volleyball team will host its final two home matches of the 2002 season this weekend when it faces Atlantic Coast Conference foes Florida State and Virginia. The Wolfpack (3-29, 0-14 ACC) enters on the prowl looking for its first conference victory of the year.
Leading the way for NC State is sophomore middle blocker Maya Mapp who has recorded a team-high 316 kills and a .294 attack percentage on the year. Continuing to step up is lone senior Rebecca Anderson, who is third on the team in kills with 194, while also recording 156 digs and 34 total blocks. Meanwhile, setter Lindi Sheppard is an accomplishable 33 assists away from recording 1,000 assists on the year.
Florida State enters with an 18-10 record, 9-5 in conference play. The Seminoles feature five different players with 200 or more kills, led by senior Kristin Frye who has 398 kills to her account. Defensively, senior Dawn Hough and sophomore Aisha Carr have been quite a successful duo in stopping opponents' attacks, combining for 219 total blocks on the year.
The Cavaliers (7-24, 1-14) are led by junior Paige Davis offensively. Davis has tallied 308 kills on the season to go along with her 31 service aces, a mark that ranks 10th in the ACC. Sophomore Alexis Geocaris has also provided strong performances for Virginia this year, heading into the weekend with 204 kills and team-highs in both attack percentage (.223) and total blocks (93).
Saturday night's match against Virginia will also be Senior Night for the Wolfpack, as NC State pays tribute to outside hitter Anderson, the only senior on the 2002 team. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
