Wolfpack Men's Golf Completes Play At Ping Preview Invitational

High scores kept scoring in the mid to high 70s the entire tournament as only five rounds in the 60s were shot out of a possible 225 played throughout the weekend. The Ping Preview Invitational was held at the Karsten Creek Golf Club, home of the 2003 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, and featured 12 of the 15 top-50 teams in the land, as well as seven top-20 teams. The Wolfpack (No. 42nd) notched 14th place with a 932 team score. Augusta State, led by first year head coach Josh Gregory, an assistant golf coach at NC State for the last two seasons, won the team title. three other ACC squads competed with Clemson, the nations No. 1 team, finishing second, Wake Forest (No. 11) finishing 6th, and Georgia Tech (No. 62nd) ended the tournament in 11th.
Justin Walters was the highest Wolfpack finisher, narrowing missing his ninth straight top-20 finish. Walters fired a final round 80 to finish tied for 21st with a three-day 225 (+9). Fernando Mechereffe tied for 42nd after a third round, 73 lowered his tournament total to 230 (+14). Jason Moon shared 45th place after a final round 77 brought his total to 231 (+15). Rodney Thomas finished 73rd, and Wesley Horne finished 75th with and 82 and 85, respectively. Thomas fired a three-day-total of 248 (+32) while Wesley Horne carded a 252 (+36).
The Men's Golf team next hits the links at The Nelson on October 25-27 in Stanford, Ca. Justin Walters won the individual title at last fall's event, the first of his two individual titles in 2001-02.
