Carolina Wrestlers Defeat Wolfpack, 21-9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNC wrestling team defeated NC State 21-9 Wednesday night in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels won seven of ten matches and improved to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack evened its record at 4-4, 0-1 in the ACC with the loss.
After dropping the first match of the contest, Coach Bill Lam's Tar Heels reeled off six straight victories to take an 18-3 lead. Matt Kenny (heavyweight) got things started with a 5-3 decision over Ngozi Collins. The two wrestlers were tied 2-2 when a Kenny takedown with 20 seconds left in the match gave him a 4-2 lead. Ngozi escaped to pull to within one but riding time gave Kenny the 5-3 decision and tied the team score at 3-3. Chris Rodrigues beat George Cintron 3-0 at 125 pounds to put Carolina ahead, 6-3. Evan Sola then jumped out to a 6-2 first period lead and allowed only a one-point escape over the last two periods to beat Ryan McCallum 9-3 at 133 pounds.
Brad Byers took a 5-3 decision over Jake Giamoni at 141 pounds and was followed by Mike Booth defeating Dave Miller 3-1 in the 149 pound weight class.
James O'Connor beat Kevin Gabrielson 7-2 at 157 pounds to give Carolina an 18-3 advantage with only three matches left.
NC State's Pierre Pryor defeated Jake Reynolds 6-1 at 165 pounds, and Dustin Kawa decisioned Mark Canty 13-6 at 174 before the Tar Heels' Nick Richmond beat Jon Godwin 10-4 to give Carolina the 21-9 victory. UNC's Dusty Heist dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Jason Gore at 197 pounds to start the match. A takedown by Gore with 13 seconds remaining gave him the decision.
Carolina is back in action this Saturday hosting Ohio at Noon in Carmichael Auditorium. The Wolfpack next face Maryland at 2 p.m. and Ohio at 7 p.m. in Raleigh Saturday.
