Raleigh, N.C. - Clemson's Ian Fuller netted the game winning goal with only 16 second left, as the visiting Tigers downed the host Wolfpack 2-1 in men's soccer Sunday afternoon at Method Road.
Clemson (4-2, 1-0 ACC) got on the scoreboard first only six minutes into the game. Chase Hilgenbrinck lobbed a ball to Oguchi Onyewu in the NC State box, and Onyewu launched a shot into the Pack net at the 6:10 mark. The score remained 1-0 Clemson through the first half.
The Pack (1-5, 0-1 ACC) responded when senior Lee Baldwin headed in a cross from Isreal Mejia at the 55:12 mark to tie the score up at 1-1.
Just as the game was heading into overtime, Fuller calmly dribbled the ball into the NC State penalty box and tucked his shot into the corner with a mere 16 seconds to play.
NC State had additional scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 60th minute Baldwin crossed the ball to Mejia who found the back of the net. Unfortunately, Mejia was called offsides and the goal did not count. With just over four minutes to play, Baldwin found himself one-on-one with the Clemson keeper, but his shot was lobbed just over the goal.
Virginia finished with 11 shots, compared to the Pack's eight. NC State goalie Mitchell Watson was credited with fours saves on the day, and Clemson's Doug Warren finished with three saves.
NC State will next host nationally-ranked Virginia this next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
