Virginia Spoils ACC Opener For NC State Volleyball

RALEIGH, N.C. - Virginia dropped the first game to NC State, but then rallied to defeat the Wolfpack in four games in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The Cavaliers won 26-30, 30-19, 30-18 and 30-21. The win lifted Virginia to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. NC State's record evened at 4-4 overall. The Wolfpack is 0-1 in the conference.
Virginia took control of the match early in the second game and maintained command from that point on. Simona Kuipers led the Cavaliers with 18 kills, a .406 attack percentage, nine digs and three blocks. Paige Davis had 11 kills, a .242 percentage, four service aces and 14 digs, while Katie Synan had 11 kills and nine digs.
For the Wolfpack, senior outside hitter Charece Williams had 18 kills, a .273 percentage, seven digs and two blocks. Williams now has 1,374 career kills and moved past Pam Sumner (1993-96) and Stephanie Taylor (1983-86) and into fourth place all-time in career kills in NC State history.
Freshman Melanie Rowe had 10 kills, two service aces and seven digs. Senior middle blocker Alison Kreager had seven kills, nine digs and two blocks.
The Wolfpack will take on Maryland in another ACC match at 7 p.m. Saturday in Reynolds Coliseum.
