Track & Field Concludes Day One Action at ACC Championships

Woods Wins 5,000 Meters
Blacksburg, Va. (Feb. 16, 2001) -- After one day of competition, the NC State men's team is currently in fourth place with a total of 19 points, while the women's squad is ninth with nine points at the 2001 ACC Indoor Championships being held at Virginia Tech this weekend.
Junior Ryan Woods was crowned ACC Champion in the 5,000 meters for NC State. Woods ran a personal-best 14:27.58 to finish first. The Pack also placed three other runners in the top-20: David Patterson was 10th (14:58.20), Abdul Alzindani was 12th (15:08.47), and Scott Wirgau finished 17th (15:36.54). Also bringing home a high finish was the men's Distance Medley Relay team. The DMR squad of Ricky Brookshire, Monterrio Adams, Brian Greer, and Chris Dugan placed second with a time of 9:57.57.
Sophomore Isaiah Oglesby brought home a seventh place finish in the shot put with a toss of 47'7". Randy Cass was 13th in the shot put with a mark of 45'1", and James Rowell placed 17th (40'09.50"). Besides being on the DMR team, Brookshire also posted the best time in the preliminaries of the mile with a time of 4:13.10. Teammate Devin Swann will also run in the mile finals tomorrow, as Swann placed ninth (4:17.36). Sophomore Joseph Brent had an impressive first day as well, placing third in the preliminaries of the 200 meters (21.72) and fifth in the preliminaries of the 60 meters (6.90). Brent will compete in the finals of each tomorrow.
Freshman Monterrio Adams just missed out in advancing to the finals of the 400 meters, he ran the preliminary round in 49.42, a mere 0.05 seconds out of eighth place. Oliver Gatchalain placed 23rd (52.18) in that same race. Sophomore Andrew Kerins ran the first round of the 800 meters in 2:00.70, and fellow sophomore Aahmese King placed 15th in the 60 meter hurdles (8.38). In the long jump, Cameron Morris took 16th (21'10"), and Chris Ganey was 17th (21'8").
Just like the men's DMR squad, the women's Distance Medley Relay team also placed high. The team of Sara Graybill, Renae Robinson, Yvonne Downing, and Janelle Vadnais posted a third place finish with a time of 11:55.25. Amy Beykirch brought home a sixth place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:14.54. Also in that race, Beth Kraft took ninth (17:38.36) and Diana Henderson was 10th (17:39.13).
The preliminary round of the 800 meters was filled with NC State runners. Molly Purser placed seventh in a time of 5:03.67, and advances to the finals tomorrow. Freshman Janelle Vadnais was 11th (5:05.78), Sara Graybill was 13th (5:14.37), Yvonne Downing was 16th (5:16.55), and Rebecca Hoover 19th (5:32.30).
Senior Annemarie Clark was busy on the day, running in two preliminaries and participating in the pole vault. Clark brought home a 10th place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 56.52, a 14th place finish in the pole vault, and was 22nd in the 200 metes (25.66). Teammate Katie Bolac recorded a 11th place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 11'03.75". Renae Robinson was 19th in the 400 meters (58.55). In the 60 meter hurdles, Adrienne Vinson placed 18 with a time of 9.08, and freshman Desiree Mittman was 28th (9.92).
The ACC Championships will resume tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m.
