Raleigh, N.C.--Jenny Boyd netted a goal and an assist as the Maryland Terrapin women's soccer team defeated the NC State Wolfpack 2-0 at Method Road Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. Maryland improves to 9-4-2 (3-3 ACC) with the triumph, while the Wolfpack drops to 7-8 (0-6).
Maryland broke an early midfield struggle between the two teams with a goal at the 19:24 mark by Boyd off a long throw-in by Lindsay Givens. Givens' throw sailed through the Wolfpack box and Boyd subsequently headed the ball past Wolfpack goalkeeper Juliana Gomez for the tally. It was one of only two shots for the Terrapins in the half as the Wolfpack outshot them 4-2 in the first 45 minutes.
The match would stay 1-0 through halftime and well into the second half, a stanza that afforded few scoring opportunities for either squad.
Junior Melissa Pressley (Cary, North Carolina) had the best opportunity to score for NC State when she sliced into the Maryland box and fired a shot just over the crossbar in the 70th minute.
The Terrpains then rushed the Wolfpack net in the 90th minute and tallied their second goal on a rebound putback by Kim King. King sneaked into the box and slotted the ball under the diving Gomez after Valerie Lawrence took the original shot.
Maryland held a 7-5 advantage in shots for the match and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
"When you don't put away opportunities, it doesn't matter how well you play your opponent," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan.
The Wolfpack will travel to Chapel Hill on Thursday for a match at 7:00 p.m. against top-ranked arch-rival North Carolina.
