Norm Chow, who orchestrated the NC State football team's high powered offense last season, has accepted an offer to become the new offensive coordinator at the University of Southern California. Chow, 54, was one of four new coaches named to Pete Carroll's staff.
"I'm excited about the staff we are assembling," Carroll said in a USC press release. "It starts with Norm Chow, whose ability and reputation as an offensive coordinator are unmatched. The Trojan offense will be highly productive and fun to watch under Norm. He has developed some of the best quarterbacks and top offenses in college history. It's a real coup that he is joining us."
Prior to joining Chuck Amato's staff in Raleigh 11 months ago, Chow became one of the nation's most respected offensive masterminds at Brigham Young University, where he developed such high profile quarterbacks as Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer. In his first and only season with the Wolfpack, Chow tutored another star in the making--freshman Philip Rivers.
Rivers was named ACC Rookie of the Year after leading NC State to a 7-4 regular season. He later helped the Pack capture a come-from-behind 38-30 victory over Minnesota in the MicronPC.com Bowl.
Chow's offense at NC State averaged more than 31 points and 435 yards per game.
Earlier this week, NC State athletics director Lee Fowler said that the school had made a competitive offer in hopes of keeping Chow. But he also added that Chow's ties to the West Coast could be difficult to overcome. During the 2000 season, the Hawaii native lived in a Raleigh Hotel. Also during that time, his family remained at their home in Utah.
