Raleigh, NC (Sept. 19) - The NC State Wolfpack used goals by three different players Sept. 19 to down UNC Wilmington 3-0 at WRAL CASL Soccer Stadium Complex. NC State improved to 4-3-1 (0-1 ACC) with the win. The Seahawks fell to 4-4 with the loss.
Sophomore forward Laura Scott started the scoring for the Wolfpack with her third goal of the season at the 23:49 mark on a header past UNC Wilmington goaltender Becky Tolzman. Sophomore midfielder Rachel Durr got the assist. In the second half, senior forward Shannon Tully broke through again for NC State at the 73:00 mark when she collected a rebound inside the 18-yard box and connected into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the year. Sophomore defender Rachel Donnelly capped the Wolfpack scoring when at the 85:34 mark on a crossing pass from freshman forward Lynsey Harrington.
The Wolfpack once again used a strong offensive attack to wear down the Seahawks defense, outshooting the opposition 19-8. Tully and freshman forward Lindsey Underwood led the way for NC State with three shots apiece. Defensively, Kristen Skinner, the ACC leader in saves per game, recorded her fourth shutout of the season by saving seven Seahawk shots. The Wolfpack also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
"The fact that we had so many young people contribute for us tonight really speaks to our great depth," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "Our substitute players have really helped raise our level of play overall. I feel as though one thing that really helped us was the fact that we had good communication in the back. We were able to stop their attack relatively quickly all night."
NC State will travel to Clemson, SC for tournament play against Furman University at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wolfpacks next ACC game will be October 1st when it travels to Maryland to take on the Terrapins.
