NC State Defeats Purdue At American University Volleyball Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 18) - Facing a loaded field, NC State won one of three matches September 15-16 at the American Univeristy Volleyball Classic.
The Wolfpack began play in the tournament on Sept. 15 with a three-game loss to George Washington, losing by scores of 8-15, 3-15 and 5-15. The Colonials hit .368 for the match and were led by Julie Jahnke who had 12 kills on .450 hitting. NCState hit .161 for the match. George Washington improved to 7-1 with the win, while NC State fell to 4-5.
NC State bounced back on Sept. 16 with a four-game upset of Purdue, beating the Boilermakers 5-15, 15-3, 15-8 and 15-7. The Wolfpack, which hit a season-high .281, was led by Stephanie Stambaugh, who recorded 15 kills with a .364 hitting. Freshman setter Crystal Shannon (45 assists, six digs and a pair of service aces) and Rebecca Anderson (15 kills, just two errors in 39 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage, and six digs). The Pack evened its record at 5-5 with the win while Purdue dropped to 8-3.
The Wolfpack played host American that evening and fell to the Eagles in three games, falling 4-15, 5-15 and 7-15. American, which improved to 10-1 with the victory, clinch the tournament championship. NC State dropped to 5-6 with the loss.
The Eagles (10-1) were led by tournament MVP, Ajola Berisha ,who hit .364 for the match and led all teams in kills for the tournament. Charece Williams led NC State with 10 kills and eight digs. Meredith Price, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, had three kills, no hitting errors, four assists and five digs for the Wolfpack. Price led the tournament with a .387 hitting percentage.
Also named to the all-tournament team were American's Silvia Panak Karla Kucerkova, Purdue's Julie Doud, and George Washington's Jill Levey and Renee Arnold.
