LUBBOCK, Tex. (Sept. 3) In the opening day of competition at the Texas Tech Four Points Classic, the NC State volleyball team defeated Wright State in straight games, 15-10, 16-14, 15-2, in the afternoon affair and then fell the host Red Raiders in three games, 7-15, 12-15, 10-15, in the evening. While this marked the first time that Texas Tech and the Pack had ever met, NC State moved their All-Time record against Wright State to 2-0.
In the first match, Coach Kim Hall used the same starting line-up as she did in the Pack's opener on Wednesday, as captain Meredith Price, Erin Vesey, Charece Williams, Lisa Liberi, Stephanie Stambaugh and Alison Kreager all began the contest. Vesey and Williams continued their hot play as they led the Pack in assists and kills respectively. Sophomore Nikki Stemler saw her first action of the season as she teamed up with freshman Katie Kost to log the only substitute minutes for the Pack. Other than a hard fought victory in the second game, the Pack seemed in control as they cursed to their second victory this season in as many contests.
In the night cap, the Pack played very impressively against a Texas Tech squad that is just out of the USA Today/AVCA Preseason Top 25 Poll. NC State's lone senior, Kerry Bridenback, logged her first action of the season and helped the Pack to stick with the Red Raiders for most of the evening. While the Pack started out slow with a first game loss of 7-15, Price led the Pack in digs for the second straight game and sophomore Alison Kreager's hot hitting made the final two games of the match a dog fight. Freshman Tara Greene got her second taste of action this season and gave NC Sate a boost of energy off of their bench.
Tomorrow, the Wolfpack will finish up play at the Four Points Classic with matches against Utah and SMU beginning at 1:00 p.m and 6:30 p.m. respectively. The Pack will return home on Tuesday, September 7, when they meet the Montana State Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. before they host the Wyndham Garden Hotel Wolfpack Invitational from Friday, September 10 until Saturday September 11. Participants of that tournament will include Morehead St., Campbell, Maryland-Baltimore County and Liberty. The University of Connecticut will also make trek to Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday, September 12 as they meet the Pack at 3:00 p.m.
