Virginia Defeats N.C. State In Volleyball, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Sept. 25) - Third-year middle hitter Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission) notched a career-high 24 kills to lead the University of Virginia to a 3-1 (15-4, 15-6, 12-15, 15-12) victory over North Carolina State in ACC volleyball action at University Hall.
The win was the Cavaliers' sixth straight over N.C. State, and also snapped a four-match losing streak. UVa now stands at 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Wolfpack falls to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Sophomore middle hitter Alison Kreager led N.C. State with 14 kills, while junior outside hitter Lisa Liberi led the team in digs with 14. Sophomore setter Erin Vesey dished out 48 set assists for the Wolfpack.
Virginia won the first game, hitting an impressive .600 (12 kills, 0 errors, 20 attempts), en route to the 15-4 victory. The Cavaliers continued their hot hitting in winning the second game 15-6. UVa hit .344 in the second game (14 kills, 3 errors, 32 assists). N.C. State regrouped to take the third game 15-12. Virginia fell behind in the fourth game 9-8, but came back to take the lead for good 11-10 on block assists by Jones and Parsons. The 'Hoos went on to close out the match with a 15-12 victory in game four.
NC State's match against High Point, that was scheduled to be played on Monday, has been put on hold so the Pack will have off until next weekend. The Pack will host Wake Forest on Friday (7:00 PM) and Duke on Saturday (5:00 PM). Both matches are scheduled to take place in Reynolds Coliseum.
