With the victory, the Cavaliers improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack falls to 3-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
Although Virginia dominated the game statistically, outshooting NC State 26-5, the game was close throughout, including a 1-1 tie at halftime. Virginia clung to a 2-1 lead until the game's final seven minutes.
True freshman Laura Scott got the Wolfpack off to a 1-0 lead when she rebounded a missed shot into the Virginia nets at the 28:03 mark. The Cavaliers tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes later when Lori Lindsey took a pass from Alyssa Benitez and drilled home a goal from right in front of the nets at 32:29.
The Cavs broke the tie just 58 seconds into the second half. Darci Borski placed a corner kick into a crowd in front of the Wolfpack goal, and Carryn Weigand headed the ball home to give Virginia a 2-1 lead. Virginia's final goal came on a virtually identical play at the 83:43 mark, with Katie Tracy scoring the header on the corner kick from Kelly Worden.
