In the opener of the invitational, the Pack was out dueled in a five game marathon by Illinois-Chicago. The Flames took the second, fourth and fifth contests to seal the win. Charece Williams led the Pack with 14 kills while Stephanie Stambaugh contributed with 13 of her own. Williams also led the Pack with 13 digs while sophomore setter Erin Vesey added 50 assists to the NC State cause.
In the Pack's other contest on Friday, NC State jumped out with a quick first game victory before faltering late in the contest to lose to the host Kangaroo's. In this contest Williams once again led the Pack in kills, this time with 20, while she shared the team lead in digs, at 13, with three other teammates. Other notes of distinction in the contest came from Alison Kreager, who added 17 kills, while Stephanie Stambaugh powered her way to 16. Captain Meredith Price, Lisa Liberi and Erin Vesey, who also added 53 assists, each shared the team high digs mark with Williams.
In the first match of Saturday, the Pack rebounded to eradicate Tennessee State in three straight games. In the final two frames, the Pack would allow a total one point to the Tigers. For the entire match, Tennessee State would tally a mere four total points. NC State's Charece Williams got nine kills in limited action. NC State freshman Tara Green played in each contest, while fellow freshman Allison Magner played in two games.
At the finally of the tournament, the Pack once again scored a straight game victory, this time over the Tribe of William and Mary. Charece Williams continued her scorching play as she notched 13 kills. While middle hitter Stephanie Stambaugh would add 10 kills to the Wolfpack cause, the true story of the match was Tara Greene. Greene not only tallied 11 kills, two short of Williams mark, but tied for the team lead with 12 digs. Sophomore Erin Vesy also had 12 digs to accompany her 37 assists.
The Pack will next face off against the Davidson Wildcats on Tuesday, September 21 at Reynolds Coliseum. That match will begin at 7:00 pm. The Pack will then begin preparation for the opening of the ACC season as they travel to face Maryland and Virginia this weekend.
