Chapel Hill, N.C. (Oct. 28) - The North Carolina volleyball team defeated the N.C. State Wolfpack in four games (15-3, 12-15, 15-4, 15-13) at Carmichael Auditorium. The win increased the Tar Heels' record to 19-4 overall, 10-1 in the ACC, while the Pack now sports a 12-15 overall mark and a 3-8 conference tally.
NC State was led by Charece Williams with 17 kills and 12 digs and Alison Kreager with 14 kills and 12 digs. Tara Greene led all players in digs with 23 and also added 12 kills.
The Tar Heels came out firing with a quick 8-0 lead in game one and increased that lead to 12 for the 15-3 win. UNC out-hit N.C. State .417 to .100 during the game.
Game two was a different story as the Pack responded by grabbing a 4-0 lead at the start. Carolina came back to tie the game at four and the teams battled until the Wolfpack used a 5-0 run to advance to a 13-7 lead. N.C. State held on from that point for the 15-12 win.
Game three was similar to game one as UNC came out of the gates quickly, this time, with an 11-0 lead. The Wolfpack could not respond as the Tar Heels took the game 15-4. Carolina again well out-hit State in the game .313 to .100.
Game four continued the alternating pattern of the match and was highly competitive. Neither team took more than a three-point advantage in the game and that only occurred once, with UNC having the 6-3 lead. The game was eventually tied at 13 before the Heels won the last two points and the match.
The senior duo of Tori Seibert and Shannon Smith led Carolina as they compiled 22 and 20 kills respectively. On her 14th kill, Shannon Smith reached 1,000 for her career. NC State will next travel to the Williams Arena to take on the East Carolina Pirates on Tuesday, November 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
