RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 23) - The NC State volleyball squad fell to the 14th ranked Clemson Tigers, in straight games, 14-16, 4-15, 11-15, at Reynolds Coliseum. The defeat drops NC State to 12-14, 3-7 in the ACC, while Clemson moves to 21-1, 9-1 in the ACC. Clemson has now swept NC State the last five times the two schools have met.
Much like their battle in South Carolina on October 5, NC State and Clemson started out the match with an exciting first game. NC State held the advantage most of the way, but Clemson soon subdued the host Wolfpack as they took their first lead at 12-13 and eventually won 16-14.
The Tigers went on the offensive following their game one victory and took the second game, with ease, 15-4 as Clemson took nine of the final ten points. The third game saw the Wolfpack take and early 7-5 lead but Clemson proved to be too formidable of an opponent, as they took the game, and consequently the match, 15-11.
Charece Williams once again led the Pack in kills, this time with 14. Williams and freshman Tara Greene shared the team lead with 13 digs. Setter Erin Vesey added 40 assists to the Wolfpack cause.
Jodi Steffes had a tremendous match for the Tigers as she tallied 22 kills and 13 digs, both team highs. Steffes was aided by setter Melissa Kudelka (50 assists) and outside hitter Cindy Stern (13 kills).
Next up for the Wolfpack is a tough ACC battle against arch-rival North Carolina. The Tar Heels, ranked 25th in the nation, have dropped only on ACC contest all season and are currently ranked as the top team in the district. The two will battle on October 28, starting at 7:00 p.m., in Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of North Carolina.
