Chris Seaton has served as an assistant coach for the Wolfpack's track & field and cross country programs since 2005 and has been a member of the staff since 2003. Seaton works with the middle distance and distance student-athletes in conjunction with head coaches Rollie Geiger and Laurie Henes.
In addition to working with the team's current athletes, Seaton serves as the men's recruiting coordinator and has been integral in bringing in some of the nation's top prep runners, a number of whom were Footlocker National Finalists and Nike Cross National Qualifiers, along with numerous all-state and state champion runners. These athletes continue the Wolfpack cross country program's tradition of success in competition and in the classroom.
Since joining the staff in the fall of 2003, Seaton has helped lead the men's cross country program to five ACC titles, seven NCAA Southeast Regional crowns, and 14 berths to the NCAA Championships, of which the team has had two top-10 finishes and finished in the top-25 eight other times.
On the track, Seaton has had a hand in coaching NC State athletes to 41 All-American honors and 24 ACC individual titles.
The 2016-17 track season saw four Pack distance athletes earn All-American status in Erika Kemp (Indoor & Outdoor 5K), Rachel Koon (Indoor 3K), Megan Moye (Indoor Mile) and Sam Parsons (Outdoor 10,000m). Kemp also claimed an individual ACC title in the indoor 3,000m.
Seaton helped guide the 2016 women’s cross country team to an ACC Championship, an NCAA Southeast Regional title and a fourth-place finish at Nationals. The Wolfpack totaled six All-ACC performers and two All-Americans in Kemp and Koon.
The 2016 men’s cross country squad placed third at ACC’s with Sam Parsons, Patrick Sheehan and Ben Barrett earning all-conference honors. The Wolfpack followed the conference meet with an NCAA Southeast Regional title, the program’s sixth since 2003. The Pack men finished the season 22nd at Nationals.
The Wolfpack men’s and women’s cross country teams each boasted four all-conference performers in 2015. Despite having no All-Americans, the women’s team went on to place fifth at the NCAA National Championships for their highest finish since 2001. During the 2015-16 track season, Seaton helped lead NC State’s distance runners to six NCAA All-America nods from Kemp (Indoor 3K & 5K), Moye (Indoor Mile) and Luis Vargas (Indoor 3K & 5K, Outdoor 10K).
Seaton coached Joanna Thompson to her second All-America honor during the 2014 cross country season. On the track, Seaton guided Graham Crawford to second-team All-America honors in the 1,500m and helped nine distance athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary and five athletes to the NCAA Championships.
In 2013, both the men's and women's teams finished third at the NCAA Southeast Regional, and the men advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th straight season. Andrew Colley earned All-American honors for the third time while Joanna Thompson earned her first All-American selection. Colley also claimed the individual champion title at the 2013 ACC Championships as well as ACC Performer of the Year for the second time.
In 2012, the Wolfpack's men's and women's teams both finished third at the NCAA Southeast Regional and fourth at the ACC Championships. The men's team went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., and Colley's 16th place finish overall earned him All-America honors.
During the 2012 indoor track season, Ryan Hill earned All-America honors in the 3,000m. He also set school records in the mile and 3,000m, with the 3K being the fastest ever run by a American born collegiate. Hill followed-up the indoor campaign with a record setting outdoor season that culminated in a 3rd place finish in the 1,500m at NCAA Championship and a 5th place finish in the 5,000m at the US Olympic Trials.
The 2011 cross country campaign was another successful year for the men's program as Geiger and Seaton guided the men to the ACC Conference title, NCAA Regional title and a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Indiviudally, the men were lead by Ryan Hill and Colley, who finished first and second at the conference championship, respectively. Hill and Colley also earned All-America honors for their 12th and 15th place finishes at the NCAA Championship.
The 2011 track season saw Hill qualify to both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships where he earned All-American honors in the 3,000m. Andrew Colley also qualified to the NCAA outdoor championships in the 5,000 meters after having run the second fastest time in school; second behind Hill's school record that was set at the same competition.
Seaton, a cross country All-American in 2001 for the Wolfpack, moved into the assistant coaching position after spending four years as a graduate assistant. He earned his master's degree in public administration and continued to compete post-collegiately, which included qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the marathon.
A transfer to NC State, Seaton competed at Virginia Tech for four years where he was a qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the DMR while earning his bachelor's degree in architecture. He continued his success on the cross country course and track after transferring to NC State by earning All-ACC honors in both cross country and track. He helped the cross country team to an ACC title and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 2001. Seaton also added to the Pack's tradition of academic excellence by earning a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
