Phil Ogletree serves as an assistant coach for NC State gymnastics, entering his ninth season with the Pack in 2025-26 after arriving in Raleigh in 2017. He works primarily with vault and floor.
In 2025, Ogletree helped guide the Pack to its 34th straight appearance in the NCAA Regionals and a top-20 national finish to conclude the campaign. The team had two All-ACC selections on vault and floor, with Ashley Knight named to the vault squad and Chloe Negrete selected to the floor team.
Alongside the rest of the coaching staff, Ogletree helped lead NC State to a successful 2024 campaign as the team captured both the ACC regular season and championship titles and made an NCAA Tournament appearance in its first year in the conference since 1984. During the season, NC State matched the third best vault score in program history with a 49.250 against Clemson on February 17. The Pack also earned five All-ACC selections across Ogletree’s primary events.
In 2023, the team ranked 24th nationally on floor and posted a score of 49.000 or higher in the event 13 times. The Pack’s highest floor score of the season came against Rutgers on March 4 with a 49.625. Ogletree helped train EAGL Floor Co-Champion Chloe Negrete, who was also named Comeback Gymnast of the Year by College World News. Under his guidance, four athletes earned First Team All-EAGL honors on floor.
NC State recorded another standout season on floor in 2022, posting seven scores of 49.000 or higher in the event. The Pack’s top performance came with a 49.325 in a quad meet at Maryland, a mark that ranks among the top 15 in program history. Three members of the squad earned First Team All EAGL honors on floor.
In 2021, the Wolfpack had three gymnasts receive All-EAGL recognition on vault, with two earning First Team honors. On floor, Ogletree guided two gymnasts to First Team All-EAGL accolades. That season, NC State also recorded a pair of top 15 program scores on vault and two top-20 team scores on floor.
The Pack finished the regular season ranked first in the league on vault with a score of 49.038 and landed in the top 25 nationally in floor NQS at the end of the year.
In 2020, Ogletree was named EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year alongside Bob Starkell, marking the second consecutive season the duo earned the award.
Under Ogletree’s guidance, freshman Emily Shepard excelled on vault with eight podium finishes and five individual titles. Three members of the team earned All-EAGL honors in the event.
On floor in 2020, the Wolfpack earned two First Team All-EAGL honors and three Second Team accolades. Multiple gymnasts posted marks of 9.900 or higher throughout the season, including senior Drew Grantham, who scored 9.900 or better in each of the final six meets. NC State closed the year ranked No. 23 nationally on floor, according to the Road to Nationals rankings.
In his second year with the program, Ogletree was named the 2019 EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year alongside Bob Starkell. On vault, NC State collected 10 event titles and notched two scores of 49.000 or better, including a 49.175. Ogletree helped Grantham to four scores of 9.900 in the event.
On floor, he guided Alexa Phillips to the 2019 EAGL individual title. As a team, NC State captured eight event wins on floor that season, recording six scores of 49.000 or higher, highlighted by a 49.225 performance against Pittsburgh in the Pack’s annual Pink Meet. Four gymnasts earned All EAGL recognition on both vault and floor.
In 2018, Ogletree coached Drew Grantham to the EAGL Vault Championship, as she posted a 9.900 in the conference meet. The Wolfpack finished the season ranked No. 13 nationally on vault and No. 20 on floor.
In his first season at NC State, Ogletree guided Chelsea Knight and Alexa Phillips to First Team All EAGL honors on vault and Drew Grantham to Second Team recognition. On floor, Knight, Grantham, and Phillips were all named to the First Team, while Mackenzie Itcush was placed on the Second Team. Six NC State gymnasts were named to the All EAGL Tournament Team on vault and three earned the honor on floor.
Ogletree joined the Wolfpack after five seasons on staff at Georgia and previously served as an assistant coach at LSU from 2001 to 2012, bringing with him extensive experience at the highest level of collegiate gymnastics.

As a member of the Bulldogs coaching staff, Ogletree directed the team’s efforts on vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise. He guided nine gymnasts to a combined 20 regular season and NCAA Championship All-America honors. He also led three gymnasts to SEC Championship event titles and saw Brandie Jay win a national title on vault in 2016.
During his time in Athens, the Gymdogs advanced to the NCAA Championship every year and reached the Super Six in 2013, 2014, and 2016. In 2014, Ogletree was named NACGC/W Southeast Region Co-Assistant Coach of the Year after Georgia finished the season ranked in the top ten nationally on both vault and floor. The squad posted a 49.625 versus Denver, tying for the highest vault score in the country during the regular season.
Prior to Georgia, Ogletree served as an assistant coach at LSU for 12 seasons. He was a key part of LSU’s success from 2001 to 2012, as the program made 10 consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship and advanced to the Super Six on three occasions.
At LSU, Ogletree primarily led the team’s efforts on bars, guiding the Tigers to 12 of the top 13 bars scores in school history, including a school record 49.650 in 2002. His bars squads ranked in the top ten nationally each year from 2004 to 2010, including a number three ranking in 2005 and a number four ranking in 2009.
LSU gymnasts earned a total of 16 All-America honors on uneven bars under Ogletree’s leadership, including a school record three gymnasts in both 2005 and 2010. In 2010, two LSU gymnasts finished in the top five on bars at the NCAA Individual Event Finals.
Ogletree, a member of the University of Georgia men’s gymnastics team from 1980 to 1982, was named NCAA Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. He helped lead the Tigers to the NCAA Super Six in 2008 and 2009.
A native of Atlanta, Ogletree also previously coached at the Georgia Gymnastics Academy in Lawrenceville and the Atlanta School of Gymnastics in Tucker. He arrived at LSU in the fall of 2000 with 18 years of coaching experience, including 11 years working with Level 10 gymnasts in the state of Georgia.
Ogletree graduated from Georgia State University in 1992 with a degree in early childhood education. He and his wife Jill have two children, Bridgett and Jake.
