Matti Smith began her role as Assistant AD for External & NIL Relations in April 2024. She leads department-wide NIL guidance, strategy and initiatives while helping oversee licensing initiatives, partnerships with Learfield/Wolfpack Sports Properties and additional relationships with NC State Athletics partners. Smith served on the department's initial advisory committee for NIL as the primary point person for social media strategy and personal branding before stepping into her current role.

Smith has worked the entirety of her professional career at NC State and spent her first seven years with the Pack in the communications department. She most recently served as the primary communications contact for the women's basketball and women's golf programs. Since joining the Wolfpack ahead of the 2017-18 academic and athletic year, Smith has worked with nearly every one of NC State's sports. Between women's basketball, swimming and diving and women's cross country, she has headed up the publicity efforts for a Final Four berth, seven conference title-winning teams, six individual national champions and multiple All-Americans.

From the 2017-18 through 2020-21 seasons, Smith also served as the primary social media manager for the department's PackAthletics accounts and executed a strategic plan that highlighted all 23 varsity sports.

Smith is a member of the advisory committee for the Wolfpack Women initiative that helps strengthen women's student-athletes at NC State financially and with resources and development opportunities. She coordinated all of the communications efforts for the launch of the initiative and has helped organize all creative content for Wolfpack Women since its October 2021 inception.

Prior to her time at NC State, Smith was a student assistant in the UNC Office of Athletic Communications where she primarily worked with men’s and women’s tennis, field hockey, men's lacrosse and women’s basketball. She spent the 2017-18 season as an Communications Assistant at NC State before starting her permanent role on the staff in November 2018. Smith also previously interned with the ACC Sports Journal and 99.9 FM The Fan.

Smith earned her B.A. in Media and Journalism from UNC in 2017. She had a concentration in sports communication and was also a Stephen Gates Memorial Scholarship recipient.

A native of Raleigh, Smith has been a huge fan of the Carolina Hurricanes for the majority of her life and gets to as many games as possible around her NC State Athletics schedule. She also enjoys reading, doing calligraphy projects, creating charcuterie boards, spending time at the beach and attending PGA Tour events in her spare time.
