Michael Lipitz joined the Wolfpack in 2011. He has two decades of intercollegiate athletics experience, including senior leadership positions encompassing nearly all aspects of the enterprise.
Lipitz serves as second-in-command and partners with the Director of Athletics in the daily leadership of NC State Athletics. He oversees personnel and legal matters for athletics, capital projects, facilities and operations, equipment, championships and special events. He has direct oversight of the football and men's and women's tennis programs, and indirect oversight of baseball, women’s basketball, wrestling, softball, gymnastics, and rifle.
Presently, he is engaged in the creative development and construction of NC State’s broadcast and production studio in preparation for the launch of the ACC Network in August 2019, as well as the planned renovation of the Murphy Football Center sports medicine unit.
Lipitz recently completed a pair of landmark capital projects for the Wolfpack. He led the $35M renovation of historic Reynolds Coliseum, which reopened in 2016 and significantly enhanced the seating bowl, infrastructure and fan amenities, and also created the NC State Athletic Walk of Fame & History all-sports museum. He also oversaw planning and construction of the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility, a $14M project completed in June 2015 that serves football, track and field, and other sports.
Lipitz spearheaded the creation of the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012, including the ESPN-televised inaugural induction gala at Reynolds Coliseum. He chairs the Hall of Fame Election Committee.
Prior to NC State, Lipitz served Maryland Athletics in a senior leadership role for 11 years from 1999-2006 and again from 2007-2011. As Senior Associate Athletics Director, he supervised women's basketball, men's lacrosse, field hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming and diving, wrestling and women’s golf. Lipitz oversaw Maryland’s marketing, licensing, ticketing and video units, and managed relationships with its third party rights holder, Terrapin Sports Marketing, its football fundraising organization, the Maryland Gridiron Network, and its letter winners organization, the M Club. He also negotiated and managed contracts, including the Under Armour all-sport apparel deal, and multimedia, concessions, merchandising and personnel agreements.
Lipitz served as Chief Operating Officer of the Orange Bowl Committee for the 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl featuring Louisville and Wake Forest. He oversaw day-to-day operations for the not-for-profit organization and had oversight of the corporate sales and partnerships, operations, and youth sports divisions.
A native of Millville, N.J., Lipitz holds a law degree from Villanova University and a political science degree from the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year starter and two-year co-captain on the men's tennis team. He and his wife, Kerry, are the parents of two sons, Henry and Charlie.
