One of the most experienced defensive line coaches in college football, Charley Wiles has spent almost four decades as a collegiate head coach.
PLAYING EXPERIENCE:
COLLEGE - Played offensive line for head coach Frank Beamer at Murray State (1983-86), where he won Kodak Division I-AA All-America honors in 1986.
EDUCATION:
Earned his degree in communication from Murray State in 1987 and an MSED from Virginia Tech in 1989.
PERSONAL DATA:
Born May 4, 1964 in Deland, Fla. He and his wife, Andi, are parents of a son, Eric, and a daughter, Kendell, who ran track at Indiana.

COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
Overall:
- Has coached in 29 bowl games.
At NC State:
- The Wolfpack ranked in the top 25 in 10 defensive categories in 2023.
- NC State led the ACC in scoring defense and passing efficiency defense in 2022, and ranked second in third down conversion defense, first downs allowed, rushing defense and total defense.
- DT Cory Durden was named a first-team All-ACC selection in his first season with the Pack in 2021.
- The 2021 NC State defense ranked second in the ACC in scoring defense (19.7 points), third in total defense (331.6 yards), third in rushing defense (124.0 yards).
- Coached second-team AP All-American Alim McNeill. McNeill also won first-team All-ACC honors.
At Virginia Tech:
- A huge part of the Hokies’ defensive success, he was just the second person to be honored by receiving a lunch pail.
- During his tenure coaching Tech’s defensive line, the Hokies registered 893 sacks, the highest total of any team in the nation over that span.
- Virginia Tech forced an FBS-best 394 interceptions during his stint in Blacksburg. In 2017, Tech led all FBS squads, limiting opponents to a completion percentage of just 48.60 percent.
- Under Wiles’ tutelage, 26 different Virginia Tech defensive linemen earned all-conference honors and twice he coached a conference Player of the Year. The Hokies had 24 consecutive teams earn bowl berths. That run included the 1999 National Championship Game, two BIG EAST championships and four ACC titles.
- Coached five individuals to seven All-America honors at Virginia Tech: Cornell Brown (1995 & 1996), Corey Moore (1998 & 1999), John Engelberger (1999), Darryl Tapp (2005) and David Pugh (2001). Moore won the Lombardi and Nagurski Awards in 1999 and was the first VT defender ever to be named a unanimous All-American. Coached two NFL second-round draft picks: Engleberger (SF – 2000) and DE Jason Worilds (Pittsburgh – 2010) and he has coached multiple players who went on to play professionally.
- Hokies tied for the national lead with 58.0 sacks and advanced to the national championship game in 1999. The Sporting News labeled the VT defensive front as the best in college football that season.
At Murray State:
- In 1995, helped lead the Racers to an 11-0 regular-season mark and a berth in the Division I-AA playoffs.
