Pack Drops Series to Hokies After Pitcher’s Duel

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State softball team dropped a tightly contested pitcher's duel to 11th-ranked Virginia Tech, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.
NC State was limited to just two hits on the day but capitalized on defensive miscues to plate its lone run, while the Hokies used timely hitting late to pull out the victory.
How It Happened
The Pack will return to Raleigh for a midweek meeting with No. 20/-- Arizona State on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 6pm on ACC Network.

How It Happened
- Both teams threatened early, but neither could push across a run in the opening inning despite NC State advancing a runner to third.
- Virginia Tech struck first in the second inning with a solo home run to left center, taking a 1-0 lead.
- NC State answered in the top of the third:
- Maia Townsend singled and advanced to third and then home after two throwing errors by the Hokie defense, tying the game 1-1.
- The Wolfpack had chances to take the lead but couldn't capitalize:
- Left multiple runners on base, including a two-on situation in the fifth inning.
- Struck out nine times against Virginia Tech pitching.
- Pitching kept NC State in the game:
- Rylee Wyman and Wynne Gore combined to allow just two runs on six hits.
- Escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning to keep the game tied.
- The Hokies broke through in the bottom of the seventh:
- A leadoff single followed by a sacrifice bunt moved the winning run into scoring position.
- With two outs, Virginia Tech delivered an RBI single to left field to walk it off, 2-1.
