
Marie Eline Madsen Becomes First NCAA Regional Champion in School History

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Marie Eline Madsen won the NCAA Charlottesville Regional with a 5-under 208 (71-69-68) Wednesday. The freshman closed out the tournament strong with a 68 to move up to the lead and become the first NC State women's golfer in school history to win a regional. Madsen will now advance to the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California from May 16-19. She becomes the second player in school history to qualify, marking the first time since 2008 an individual has advanced.
NC State women's golf finished in sixth place with a 24-over 876 (289-290-297). The Pack finished seven shots off the cutline to advance to nationals, and at 24-over par, NC State carded its seventh best score at a regional in school history.
ROUND 1
The Pack teed off in the second wave of players, going into the tournament as the No. 8 seed. Three golfers finished at 1-over or better with three sitting inside the top 20 after round one. Madsen led the Pack with an even 71, doing so behind five birdies, nine pars, three bogeys and one double bogey. She was tied for 11th after round one. Jaclyn Kenzel and Lauren Olivares Leon each carded a 1-over 72. Kenzel started the round out strong with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two, finishing with three on the day, as well as 12 pars with two bogeys and one double bogey. Olivares was 3-over par through the first nine holes but came up with three birdies and five pars in her next eight holes to finish strong despite a bogey on hole 18. The duo was tied for 18th after the first round.
Vania Simont carded a 3-over 74 on day one, finishing at even par thru the back nine to finish the round with three birdies, 10 pars, four bogeys and one double bogey. Caitlin Whitehead finished the first round with a 7-over 78. The Pack carded a 5-over 289 in the first round to sit in sixth.
ROUND 2
On day two, the Pack teed off hole 10, fighting to be in a good position to make the cut. Madsen paced the Pack with a 2-under 69 to log her 10th round in the 60s and 20th round at par or better this season. She almost had a clean card until a bogey on seven, finishing the day with three birdies and 14 pars. She moved up to fourth place and three shots off the No. 1 spot at 2-under par. Whitehead had a solid second round with a 2-over 73, highlighted by her third hole-in-one of her career off hole No. 13. She finished the day with that eagle, two birdies, nine pars and six bogeys, while also moving up 10 spots to a tie for 41st.
Kenzel tallied a 3-over 74, doing so with two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys. Olivares also had a 3-over 74, as she recovered from a tough stretch in the back nine to finish at 1-under through the front. The senior had two birdies, 12 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey. The pair sat at a tie for 27th going into the third round. Simont had a 6-over 77 on the day, finishing strong on the front nine with three birdies and six pars. She was tied for Whitehead for 41st through two rounds.
ROUND 3
Going into the third round as the leading individual from the projected non-advancing teams and three shots off the lead, Madsen carded her best score of the week with her 3-under 68 for her 11th round in the 60s this season. On Wednesday, Madsen had a bogey to start the round but finished the day with four birdies and 13 pars to finish at 5-under 208 for the tournament. As the leading individual from the non-advancing teams, Madsen has advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual for the first time since 2008, as Lauren Doughtie did so. Olivares carded a 1-over 72 on Wednesday, finishing with three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys. She finished the tournament in 21st with a 5-over 218. Simont was 6-over par in the final round, finishing the regional in a tie for 43rd with a 15-over 228. Kenzel tied with Simont with a 15-over 228 after going 11-over par in the third round. Whitehead logged a 9-over on 80, finishing with an 18-over 231 and a 50th place finish.
The Pack finished with 37 birdies, the third most in the tournament. In par 3s, Madsen finished with the fourth best par 3s average (2.93) and Whitehead finished with the 10th best average (3.0). Madsen also had a tie for the most birdies (12) and the fifth best par 4s average (3.96) and par 5s average (4.75) in the tournament field. Whitehead was also one of three in the field to come up with an eagle.
