CORAL GABELS, Fla. – No. 13 NC State baseball dropped the series opener against Miami Friday night, 6-4, from Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. It was the first ACC loss since April 12th.
NC State (30-14, 15-7) had the leadoff runner on in seven of the nine innings and mustered 11 hits, but it was not enough as Miami (28-18, 13-9) was able to hold the Wolfpack scoreless through the final five innings.
Luke Nixon recorded a three-hit night and drove in a run with two doubles, and Florida native Alex Sosa had two hits. Chris McHugh extended his hitting streak to nine games with two hits while Josh Hogue, Drew Lanphere, and Nixon accounted for the runs driven in.
Dominic Fritton (5-4) managed to go 6.1 innings but allowed six runs on nine hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
Miami starter Griffin Hugus (5-4) won after 5.1 innings of work, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Hurricanes made two errors, but Daniel Cuvet had two home runs and five RBIs to lead the home to their ninth straight ACC win.
Despite Fritton striking out the side in the first inning, Miami got on the board after Cuvet's first two-run home run. After a scoreless second, NC State cut into the lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Hogue. The Wolfpack looked to tie the game in the same inning after a McHugh single, but Matt Heavner got thrown out at the plate to keep it a one-score game.
The Hurricanes added to the lead at the bottom of the third. Cuvet hit his second home run of the night, another two-run shot, to push the Miami lead to three.
NC State responded and tied the game in the top of the fourth as Justin DeCriscio led off the inning with a single. A single from Brayden Fraasman and a Miami error put runners on second and third with only one out. Nixon's hit of the night brought home DeCriscio. A fielders' choice from Lanphere forced the shortstop to throw to third, and a wide throw scored two to tie the game.
Miami took the lead in the fifth. Fritton had gotten a fielder's choice and two strikeouts, but the ball was not caught cleanly, and with the runner breaking for third, he avoided the tag to keep the inning going. With the bases loaded, two outs, and in a 1-2 count on the batter, Jake Ogden made a break for home before Fritton could get a pitch off and stole home safely to give the Hurricanes the lead.
The home team added another in the seventh from a sacrifice fly. Jacob Dudan and Tristian Potts came on for the Wolfpack and kept it close to try to give the Wolfpack a chance at a comeback.
Up Next: NC State and Miami continue the series tomorrow, May 3rd, at 6 p.m. The game has been moved to ACC Network and can be heard on WKNC 88.1 FM and the Varsity Network App.
