JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – 12th-ranked NC State couldn't overcome three errors as they fell to Ohio State 8-3 Friday afternoon to open the Jacksonville Classic.
Justin DeCriscio hit his first home run in a Wolfpack uniform, a three-run shot in the bottom of the third, but that was all NC State's offense (3-2) would have on the day.
The Buckeye bullpen combined for 6.1 innings of shutout baseball while only giving up three hits, three walks, and striking out five. Hunter Shaw (1-1) picked up his first win of the season.
Ohio State (1-3) got on the board first. Back-to-back walks began the second inning, which led to the Buckeyes plating three runs in the top of the second after a throwing error with the bases loaded brought in two, with a third being added after a sacrifice bunt from the Buckeyes.
With one swing of the bat, the game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the third as DeCriscio hit his first home run of the season. Decriscio had reached base on 10 of his first 18 at-bats with NC State.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, the Buckeyes reclaimed the lead for good with a two-run home run after an error by the Wolfpack kept the inning alive.
Starting pitcher Dominic Fritton (0-1) battled all afternoon, throwing 109 total pitches in 4.2 innings of work, giving up five runs, which only one was earned on five hits and six walks. One hundred nine pitches and six walks are both career-highs for Fritton.
NC State looked to respond in the bottom of the fifth and threatened after getting the first two batters on base with nobody out, but Ohio State was able to retire the next three Wolfpack batters, keeping the score 5-3.
Ohio State capitalized off Wolfpack miscues in the top of the sixth once again with two more runs to take a 7-3 lead. NC State stranded two more runners on base in the bottom of the sixth.
In total, NC State left nine runners on base and was 2-11 with runners in scoring position. The Pack had the bases loaded three times but failed to score.
Transfer junior Landon Carr made his Wolfpack debut in the top of the seventh inning and worked one inning before giving way to Jaxon Lucas for his first appearance of the year. Lucas threw the first 1-2-3 inning for the Wolfpack in the eighth.
After Ohio State added a home run at the top of the ninth, NC State loaded the bases with nobody out and the top of the order up to try to chip into the lead and mount a comeback. A fielder's choice and two strikeouts kept the Pack off the board and ended the ball game.
Up Next: The Jacksonville Classic continues for the Wolfpack on Saturday, Feb. 22, with NC State facing off with Alabama at 4 pm.
