Wolfpack Concludes the Season after Long Battle with #8 SMU

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team took a 2-1 lead over eighth-ranked SMU but came up short in the fifth set in the final match of the 2025 season.
Senior Courtney Bryant led the Pack with a career high 24 kills and hit .317 in final game of her collegiate career.
The Mustangs took the opening set, 25-14 after the Wolfpack struggled to slow them offensively.
The Pack rallied back in the second set after being down 16-21 and went on a 6-0 scoring run to tie the frame, 21-all. NC State allowed the Mustangs to score two more points before taking the set 25-23, shaking things up.
The third set was a battle before SMU took a 15-8 lead heading into the media timeout. The Pack eventually tied things up, 22-all, before taking a one-point lead. After playing set point eight different times, redshirt-freshman Alyssa Forelli picked up a kill in the Mustangs back court to take the set, 32-30.
NC State tallied eight blocks in the third set compared to the Mustangs' two. Freshman middle blocker Talia Francom led the defensive efforts with five blocks in the third frame.
The Pack carried its momentum into the fourth set, as it took a 15-9 lead over the Mustangs. After a 3-0 scoring run by the Mustangs minimized the Pack's lead to three (15-12), head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney took a timeout.
The Wolfpack rebuilt a four-point lead before the Mustangs managed to close out the fourth set with a 7-1 scoring run to take the set, 25-23, and even the match at two-all.
The Pack struggled in the fifth set to slow the Mustangs or get the offense going. After attempting to battle back, SMU proved to be unstoppable. The Pack fell in the fifth set, 7-15 after back-to-back service aces by SMU setter, Averi Carlson.
NC State out-blocked the Mustangs 13.5-8 in the match
The Wolfpack closes its first season under the leadership of Wargo-Kearney with an overall record of 15-15 and a conference record of 8-12.
