RALEIGH – Second-ranked NC State men's soccer faced its first loss of the season after falling to No. 16 Virginia Sunday night by a 1-0 score.
The loss puts the Pack at 8-1-2, marking the program's best start to a season since 1985.
With the Pack back at home for the first time in nearly three weeks and facing its first ranked opponent of the season, a crowd of nearly 3,000 drew to Dail Soccer Stadium.
Despite being on home turf, confidence was turned down when Tyler Caton was assessed a red card in just the eighth minute of the game for a high-kick, meaning the team would play man down for the remaining 82 minutes.
The Cavaliers found the back of the net in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead. NC State hung with them for the remainder of the game, despite only having 10 players on the field.
Tensions continued to run high between both teams, as by the end of the game, 11 yellow cards had been awarded.
In total, Virginia tallied 13 shots while NC State had 10, as offensive opportunities were available on both sides of the field.
