
No. 9 Women’s Basketball Beats No. 10 Maryland in Preseason Exhibition

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 9 NC State women's basketball team powered through to defeat No. 10 Maryland in a preseason exhibition at First Horizon Coliseum on Sunday, 83-75. The game featured 10 lead changes and three ties, including a 13-1 run by the Pack in the last four minutes of the game.
NC State had five players in double figures, led by Zoe Brooks' 20 points. Qadence Samuels was huge on the boards, especially in the fourth quarter with seven of her 11 boards in that frame.
NC State started the game with a 7-0 lead, with its offense sparked by two Khamil Pierre layups. The lead changed four times in the first, as the Pack led 19-16 after one quarter. Pierre logged six and Tilda Trygger had five of the Pack's 19 points in the first frame.
Maryland went on an 8-0 run midway through the second quarter, but Devyn Quigley responded with two 3-pointers. The Terrapins went up as many as eight, but in the remaining 2:34 of the first half, NC State outscored Maryland 10-4, including a Brooks and-1. The Pack trailed by two, 45-43, at the half.
In the first half, Pierre and Brooks led the Pack with 10 points, a piece, while Quigley logged six. The Pack shot 52 percent from the field and outrebounded the Terrapins 19-17 in the first half.
The Pack got things rolling in the third quarter, opening up the frame on a 12-2 run. After a Quigley triple and Qadence Samuels layup, the Pack went up 55-49, as Maryland took a timeout with 4:52 left in the quarter. Trygger extended the lead to seven off a triple, but Maryland responded with a 5-0 run at the end of the third, as the Pack led 63-61 at the end of the third.
Maryland retook the lead to start the fourth for the ninth lead change of the game. After Maryland went up by six with 6:33 left, Brooks made two key layups in the Pack's 12-1 run, as NC State led 79-74 with 2:01 left in the game. NC State held Maryland to no field goals with 6:33 left in the game and Samuels was huge on the boards, as the Pack pulled out an 83-75 top 10 preseason win.
PACK PERFORMERS
- Brooks led the way for the Pack with a 20-point outing to go with seven rebounds and three assists. The junior also provided a team-leading five steals
- Pierre scored 16 points in just 22 minutes on the floor, while also grabbing six rebounds
- Trygger recorded a double-digit performance with 15 points to go with six rebounds
- Quigley provided 11 points and three rebounds off the bench to lead the Wolfpack reserves. Nine of her 11 points came from beyond the arc, as she shot 60 percent (3-of-5) from three
- Zamareya Jones rounded out the game's double-digit scorers with 10, while dishing out a team-high four assists
- Samuels led the way for the Wolfpack on the glass with a team-leading 11 rebounds
- As a team, the Pack shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field, with an 80 percent (24-of-30) shooting mark from the foul line
- NC State outscored Maryland, 20-14, in the final quarter, including a 13-1 run over the game's final 4:22, to secure its victory
- The Pack outscored Maryland in the paint, 40-32
