ATLANTA, Ga. - Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2024 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank. The list includes 21 of the nation's top college football coaches representing all Power Four conferences and an independent.
Â
Managed by Peach Bowl, Inc. and presented by PNC Bank, The Dodd Trophy, college football's most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership, and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's coaching philosophy.
Â
Entering his 12th season at NC State, Doeren boasts the second-longest tenure in the ACC and the sixth-longest in the FBS. He has guided NC State to at least eight wins in six of the last seven seasons, with four nine-win campaigns in that time. In the Power conferences, only four other teams (Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson) have won eight or more games in each of the past four years.
Â
The Wolfpack ranks second in the ACC in conference wins since 2020 with 23 (second only to Clemson's 26), and nine of his 11 Wolfpack squads have qualified for postseason bowls - the most of any coach in program history.
Â
In 2023, the Wolfpack won five straight league games (for the first time in 50 years) to close the season and qualify for the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando. His defense ranked in the top 25 nationally in 10 different categories, and the Pack finished 18th in the final CFP rankings.
Â
Five of his players have won seven national awards. Bradley Chubb won the Nagurski Trophy and the Hendricks Award in 2017, Garrett Bradbury was the recipient of the 2019 Rimington Trophy, and in 2022, Christopher Dunn won the Lou Groza Award. In 2023, LB Payton Wilson brought home the Butkus and Bednarik Awards, while long snapper Joe Shimko won the Patrick Mannelly Award. He has coached two ACC Defensive Players of the Year.
Â
Under his guidance, the Wolfpack has boasted 66 Academic All-ACC performers—including a program-high 13 in 2022—and in 2018, a player was named to the prestigious NFF National Scholar-Athlete Team.
Â
The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc., taking into consideration each program's graduation rate, Graduation Success Rate (GSR), commitment to service and charity in the community, projected success for the 2023 season and Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Coaches named to this year's preseason watch list must have an APR higher than 980. Additionally, coaches in the first year with their current teams were not included as they were ineligible to receive The Dodd Trophy until their second year with their program.
