Mathews Finish is best for an NC State golfer since Matt Hill won the NCAA Championship in 2009
CARLSBAD, Calif. – NC State men's golfer Nick Mathews finished in 15th place out of 155 golfers at the 2024 NCAA Men's Golf Championships played at the Omni La Costa North Course.
Mathews' finish is the best for an NC State golfer in the season-ending tournament since Matt Hill won the individual title at the NCAA Championships in 2009.
The Mebane, N.C., native opened the championship with a one-over par 73 and shot a five-over par 77 to to sit at six-over through two days of competition.
After posting zero birdies in his second round, Mathews recovered with an excellent third day as he posted six birdies on his way to a four-under par 68 to easily make the cut for the fourth and final round of competition.
Mathews score of four-under par ties for the second-lowest round in an NCAA Championship in program history and also tied for the second-lowest round by any golfer at the 2024 NCAA Championship.
Only Georgia Tech's Hiroshi Tai – who went on the capture the individual title – had a better 18 hole score than Mathews third round 68 as the Yellow Jacket opened the tournament with a five-under par 67.
Mathews shot a one-under par 71 on the fourth and final day to finish in a tie for 15th place with a score of one-over par.
GT's Tai won the individual title by one shot over six golfers who finished at two-under par. Only 14 of the 155 golfers shot even-par or better through four rounds as Mathews finished in a tie for 15th place with two other golfers at one-over par.
