DALLAS – NC State third baseman Alec Makarewicz has been named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Thursday afternoon.
The NCBWA's Dick Howser Trophy is known as the most prestigious award in college baseball and is given annually to the top player in the country. Makarewicz is one of just 68 student-athletes nationally named to the list and one of just 13 players from the ACC. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
Makarewicz, a graduate student from Longwood, Florida, has had a career year in his final collegiate season, leading NC State with a .358 batting average, 72 hits, 18 homers, 65 RBI, a .721 slugging percentage and 145 total bases. Makarewicz has already smashed a single-season career high with 18 homers, seven more than his previous career-high of 11. He has also already set single-season career bests with 145 total bases, 19 doubles and 65 RBI.
The switch-hitting third baseman has homered from both sides of the plate twice this season and leads the Wolfpack with two grand slams. Makarewicz ranks fourth in the ACC with 65 RBI and second in the conference with 1.35 RBI per game. Makarewicz is tied with corner infield partner Garrett Pennington for second in the ACC with 19 doubles and third in the league with 0.40 doubles per game.
Makarewicz, the nation's active leader with 251 career games played, was named the ACC Player of the Week on March 4 after batting .455 with a team-high 10 hits, four doubles, 13 RBI, 20 total bases and six extra-base hits.
The graduate third baseman and the Wolfpack close out the 2024 regular season this weekend in Raleigh against No. 8 Wake Forest. Thursday night's series opener is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
