RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men's golfer Nick Mathews captured the individual title and the NC State men's golf team finished first in the team event as the Pack swept the Stitch Intercollegiate on a windy Saturday afternoon at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Blustery conditions on both Friday and Saturday made Lonnie Poole a tough track for the 81 golfers. Out of 243 rounds played, only four golfers had rounds below 70 and none of the 81 golfers finished below par for the tournament as Mathews captured the individual title with a score of two-over par.
The Pack stayed on top of the team leaderboard throughout the day on Saturday as NC State finished with a five-shot win over second place UNCG. Duke finished in third place, 11 shots back of UNCG.
Its the first team title for the Pack since it won the Hootie at Bulls Bay in the spring of 2022.
This marks the 12th tournament title for NC State head coach Press McPhaul in seven seasons with the Pack.
Mathews started the day in a six-way tie for first place, but emerged victorious as he carded a one-over par 72 to capture his first collegiate individual title.
The Mebane, N.C., native shot a two-over par 73 in the first round on Friday and then carded a one-under par 70 in the second round before finishing with a 72 on Saturday to finish with a three-round score of 215.
Carter Graf, the defending champion on the event, finished with a three-round score of four-over par to finish in a tie for fourth. It's the second top-five finish of the season for Graf.
