
Pack Closes Out Weekend With A 4-3 Win Over Georgia Tech

RALEIGH, N.C.- No. 20 NC State men's tennis took the court Sunday, Mar. 10 facing the No. 28 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the second match of the Pack's two match weekend in Raleigh.
The Wolfpack headed into Sunday's match with high spirits coming off of a 4-0 sweep against the Clemson Tigers Friday, Mar. 8. With a victory over the Tigers the Pack extended its conference record, 2-1, and 9-4 overall.
Statement from Head Coach Kyle Spencer:
"So proud of our guys, we played a very good Georgia Tech team. Doubles was really close, but really proud of Luca and Robin for really getting up on top. Then Fons and Braden really set the tone for us as a unit out there."
The Wolfpack headed into doubles with a tough matchup ahead. The Yellow Jackets took the court coming off of a 3-4 loss over No. 4 Wake Forest.
Over on court five Fons Van Sambeek and Braden Shick played a thin match against opponents Richard Biagiotti and Elias Shoky (GT). Both programs found themselves in a 2-2 matchup early on anticipating a neck and neck battle. Finding chemistry, Van Sambeek and Shick pushed a 5-2 lead over the Yellow Jackets. To close out the match, Shick taking advantage of a high ball slammed the match point to give the Pack a lead in doubles play.
On court three the Yellow Jackets put pressure on Joe Wayand and Damien Salvestre, catching an early 4-1 lead. Giving up the next two games the Pack struggled to get ahead dropping to the Yellow Jackets 6-3.
Luca Staeheli and Robin Catry set the tone on court one for their Yellow Jacket opponents No. 38 Marcus McDaniel and Keshav Chopra (GT) getting a quick 4-1 lead. Dropping the next three sets the Pack were searching for opportunities to get out of a bind. Pushing through, the pair came out on top 6-4 clinching the doubles point for the Pack.
Heading into singles the Yellow Jackets gave the Wolfpack a battle with close matches on all courts. Luca Staeheli got a jump in the first set over Marcus McDaniel 6-4. McDaniels, who refused to back down without a fight, gave Staeheli a back and forth second set. Staeheli breaking away gave the Pack its first singles point on the board, pushing 7-5 in his second set on court three.
No. 95 Braden Shick put No. 42 Keshav Chopra (GT) to the test on court two in a neck and neck 7-5 first set. Shick, who was eager to give the pack another point, made adjustments after dropping 4 games to Chorpa and finished strong 6-4 in the second set.
Refusing to allow a sweep from the Pack, the Yellow Jackets racked up points on courts one and five. On court four No. 103 Fons Van Sambeek didn't budge, taking the first set 6-1 against opponent Richard Biagiotti. After a strong first set Van Sambeek dropped the next in a 4-6 battle. After composing himself Van Sambeek weakened opponent Richard Biagiotti (GT) in a 6-0 third set victory. Clinching the win for the Wolfpack.
