Shepard Wins Third-Straight Gymnast of the Week Honor
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, NC State gymnastics won a pair of honors in the ACC's weekly awards with Emily Shepard winning ACC Gymnast of the Week and Alexis Ortega being named Co-Specialist of the Week.
The honor marks the third week in a row that Shepard has been named ACC Gymnast of the Week, with her Feb. 11 performance against North Carolina marking one of the best single-meet showings in program history.
Shepard won three of the afternoon's four events, claiming individual titles on vault, bars, and floor as well as claiming the all-around crown with a four event-score of 39.525. Only one total ranks above that in program history, with 39.550 being hit on four separate occasions, one of which was Shepard during NC State's 197.225-196.225 win over Rutgers in 2023.
Shepard posted a pair of 9.900 scores on both beam and floor, while also tabbing a meet-high 9.875 on bars and matched teammate Ashley Knight's 9.850 on vault during the Wolfpack's opening rotation.
As for Ortega, the graduate competed in a trio of events that were highlighted by a career-high 9.925 on beam. Ortega's career best helped NC State achieve its best beam score of the season with a team total of 49.400, which also marked the best score of any Wolfpack rotation this season.
Ortega's three-event day was completed with a 9.775 on vault and a 9.800 on bars, earning NC State's second Specialist of the Week honor this season.
Shepard, Ortega, and the rest of the NC State gymnastics team will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 for a dual meet against Clemson. Saturday will mark the Tigers' first visit to Reynolds Coliseum, with the first rotation slated for 4 p.m. and a stream available on the ACC Network Extra.
