
Pack Falls to Purdue in Rady Children’s Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The NC State men's basketball dropped its first game of the season Thursday afternoon, falling to Purdue, 71-61, in the opening round of the Rady Children's Invitational.
NC State trailed by just one point at halftime, but could never get over the hump in the second half. Purdue went on a 15-4 run early in the second half to take a 50-38 lead with 12:33 to play and the Pack never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Jayden Taylor led the Pack with 15 points while Brandon Huntley-Hatfield had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Those were the only players in double figures for the Pack as Ben Middlebrooks (9) and Trey Parker (7) led NC State's bench scoring effort.
Purdue was led by Trey Kaufman-Renn who scored a game-high 22 points.
NC State game into the game leading the nation in fast break points at over 28 per game, but was held to just eight on Thursday against the Boilermakers.
The Pack lost the turnover battle as Purdue only had six turnovers after NC State had forced each of its first five opponents into 15 or more turnovers.
The Pack jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, but a long scoring drought allowed Purdue to go on a 14-0 run to take an 18-9 lead on a Caleb Furst lay-up with 11:17 to play.
The Boilers lead was still, 22-13, when the Pack went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 24-23 with 5:25 left in the opening half. Purdue would score the next five points to push its lead up to six, but six straight points from the Pack tied the game at 29 with 1:51 left in the half.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield drained a three-pointer on the Pack's final possession of the half to end the scoring with Purdue holding a 33-32 lead at intermission.
The Pack is back in action tomorrow when it faces the loser of the Ole Miss-BYU game. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FOX.
