Men’s Tennis’ Time at the NCAA Singles Championship Comes to a Close

WACO, Texas – NC State men's tennis closed out its performance at the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at Baylor's campus on Wednesday.
The impressive fall campaign by the Wolfpack marked the first time the program has qualified three singles players in the same season to participate in the NCAA Singles Championship.
Braden Shick opened his action with an epic defeat over 12th-ranked Petar Jovanovic from Mississippi State in just two sets, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Shick was ranked No. 33 in the nation from ITA's preseason singles list.
No. 57 Luca Staeheli took down South Carolina's Lucas Andrade da Silva in the first round when he claimed the first set that went to a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker, fell in the second set 3-6, but came back to take control of the third 6-3.
90th-ranked Martin Borisiouk fell to Baylor's No. 61 Devin Badenhorst in the opening round when he dropped his first set 6-4, and forced his opponent to a 7-6 (9-7) tiebreaker in order to defeat him in two sets.
On day two of the tournament, in the round of 32, both 33rd-ranked Braden Shick and 57th-ranked Luca Staeheli were knocked out of the bracket for the Pack.
Lui Maxted of TCU, ranked No. 39 in singles secured victory over Staeheli by a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Shick displayed a valiant performance in his match with UCLA's 55th-ranked Spencer Johnson that went to three sets. Although losing the first set 6-1, he dominated the second one 6-3, but ultimately fell in the third set's tiebreaker 7-6 (4).
When asked about his players' performance in the tournament, head coach Kyle Spencer stated, "Fantastic way to cap off the fall season with a bit of program history having 3 singles participants in the NCAA's. Braden Martin and Luca represented our program so well in this tournament. Now we turn our attention to the Spring season where look to send our 3 seniors off with a special season! Pack Risin'!"
