LOS ANGELES – NC State women's basketball guard Saniya Rivers has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Wednesday night.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2023-24 season thus far, the list is made up of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for an honor that recognizes the National Player of the Year.
Rivers is averaging 13.1 points on 40.9 percent shooting (54-of-132) while also adding in 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The Wolfpack junior is ranked in the ACC in each of those statistical categories, and the well-balanced stat line marks the best of her three-year career thus far.
A native of Wilmington, N.C., Rivers has helped the sixth-ranked squad to a 14-1 record and three nationally-ranked wins to start the 2023-24 campaign. Her highest scoring performance of the season came in the form of a 33-point, 10-rebound double-double in a Nov. 12 victory over then-No. 2 UConn. Rivers became the first Pack player to post 30+ points in a game since Feb. 13, 2019, and she went on to set career highs in rebounds (16) and assists (8) in the team's road win at Virginia to close out December.
Rivers has scored in double figures eight times this season and currently rides a three-game streak of 10+ point outings.
Later this season, the Los Angeles Athletic Club will send this year's final National Ballot of 15 players to its group of voters. The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament, and the winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented following the NCAA Tournament in April.
